MBG film festival

Dear Friends

This is a brief outline of the MBG International Film Festival we had from Monday, 27th Sept to Monday 11th October, after school hours.

Once the films were selected and dates decided, our principal Ma’m Bhagat  said she would be willing to make arrangements for the children to see the films on a big screen. This created a lot of excitement amongst all of us.

My students had their 1st term exams till 24th Sept. I used facebook  (also) to make the announcement of the festival . A few students who had passed out some years ago and were staying outside the city (and had luckily added me to  their ‘friends’ list) expressed regret that they could not join in. But they were willing to be involved, and so they designed the logo, badge, mailed me the synopsis of films. AND thanked me for giving them the opportunity!

Meanwhile, children were registering themselves for the festival, designing the poster, printing it, putting them in strategic places,  ensuring every classroom had the film  programme schedule on its board, etc.

On 24th, after their last exam was over, we had a small meeting of 5 students, and work was distributed.

We decided that on the inaugural day, 27th Sept, the banner would be put up, badges distributed, our  principal would light the lamp, and then , the film would be introduced, screened and discussed. Handouts carrying the synopsis were to be  given after the film. All went off as planned, except for the surprise at the end. Packets of popcorn and drink were also arranged by the school for the children!

What didn’t work out - The synopsis of the film was mailed a day before the screening, and so , many felt that we need not have given handouts .Activities suggested after the discussion were praised, but very few participated.

The way ahead - We decided to meet on 26th and 28th October to have a more deeper analysis for those very interested  in understanding cinema. Though we are having vacations (our school reopens on 8th Nov), 15 and 9 children were present on these dates, respectively.
A few have submitted their ‘activities’ in CDs, and we are moving ahead, with this serious task of educating ourselves through cinema and educating ourselves on cinema!

We would welcome  your suggestions and comments.

Rupali
